Charles often played with her distant relative Rowland when they were both young children. Charles enjoyed Rowland's company and adoration, and the two girls often sneaked around the vast palace.
They soon discovered a mysterious building.
How could they get in? Charles remembered that her father kept some keys that might fit with the keyhole.

After some more sneaking about, Charles and Rowland finally unlocked the door and revealed its secrets. A long corridor filled with many legendary weapons lay beyond the door. Jayeuse, the sword of power, was displayed at the end of the corridor. Charles remembered her father telling her only those who wield Joyeuse can become the ruler of the Franks.
"Then I shall do whatever it takes to wield the Sword of Joy." Charles swore to herself.

Rowland, on the other hand, fell hopelessly attached to another weapon. She asked Charles whether she could give it to her if she became a knight.
Charles agreed. After her inauguration as the ruler of the Franks, she fulfilled her promise and granted Rowland the sword of her dreams. It was the legendary blade named Durandal.

Charles would spend many years looking for other divine artifacts. She met many brave warriors and knights along the way and convinced them to join her war against the Honkai. The best knights were allowed to visit and arsenal and pick a weapon of their choosing. "Pledge your blade to my service, and I shall reward you with a weapon worthy of your might."

But war also brought death. Rowland, the first knight to pledge her service to Charles, eventually fell in battle. The howl blade Durandal was also lost with her.
Sever paladins and advisors asked Charles to initiate a quest to recover Durandal and grant it to another knight. Charles refused. "My best friend, Rowland, deserves Durandal. Let them keep each other company in their eternal sleep."
